An up cycled wine holder was dry brushed a pretty cream color and turned into a rustic farmhouse utensil holder. The weathered looking chicken wire and the numbered plates give it an authentic vintage look. It’s also perfect to hold colored pencils, marker, scissors, and other crafting or office supplies. Over the last several months I’ve spent a lot of time in my kitchen.
Painting.
Not cooking that is.
But I used that time wisely and let my mind wander as I was painting.
Since we moved in a couple of years ago I’ve had a hard time decorating my kitchen. I would love the actual kitchen decor but would hate how busy it felt.
The cherry cabinets always seemed to be fighting with the lighter wood floors.
And the kitchen canisters, fruit basket, coffee items and candle holders were fighting with the busy granite counter tops.
So you see, there was an all out war happening in the one place where I spent most of my time.
My eyes had a hard time finding what to land on because all of these things were fighting one another and I just didn’t know what to do to bring it all together.
But as the days of painting my kitchen cabinets flowed from one to another, a plan started to emerge.
And the excitement started to build.
I realized there was a way to have my cake and eat it, too.
I came up with several creative ways to not only decorate in a cohesive fashion, but to organize and maximize every square inch of my kitchen counter space.
And I couldn’t wait for the hubs to get home from work and I could say, “Honey, I was thinking…”.
Oh, how he loves that phrase! After almost 20 years, my poor husband realizes whatever follows that phrase will entail a lot of work…usually on his part.
So part of my grand plan is taking time to get finished, but it’ll be worth the wait when it’s all said and done.
However, the wine rack storage solution I’m sharing today is quick, simple, and versatile, too!
The Galvanized Farmhouse Wine Rack Turned Utensil Holder
It all started with this Galvanized Chicken Wire Wine Holder.
Normally I would love the rustic dark bronze, but it blended right in with my counter tops.
And remember, I’m trying to tie in all of the decor in the kitchen.
From a design aspect I want a variety of textures (think baskets, galvanized metal, boxwood wreath, etc.), but I want to keep the color scheme very simple. This will allow the eye to take in everything as a whole before dissecting it down into individual pieces.
Remember how I talked about the wood floor, the wood cabinets, the granite and decor all fighting each other? Well, changing the color of the dark bronze will eliminate that while allowing it to shine all on its own. And it will give it the vintage farmhouse look I’m going for instead of the “freshly purchased, store bought” look.
I removed the galvanized buckets and then dry brushed Sherwin Williams Kiliam Beige on the rest of the wine holder. In some areas I dry brushed a little more paint on while in other areas I allowed the dark brown to show through. I didn’t sand any to distress. So it was quite simple.
I used General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Flat to seal the paint and add a little more protection since it would be getting daily use.
It looks naturally aged, doesn’t it?
And when I’m ready to change up my kitchen decor, I can use this as a craft supply organizer in the office.
The galvanized buckets are the perfect size to hold colored pencils, markers, pens, and scissors.
And I love the colorful display of markers…
And how about these vintage numbers? Since I liked how they originally looked, I didn’t paint them.
Here are some of my other favorite, multi-purposed storage solutions:
